Objective Proxy
Updated February 28, 2026
An objective proxy is a measurable, externally verifiable data point used to evaluate whether a supplement stack is producing its intended effect. It reduces the influence of expectancy bias on decisions.
Why it matters
Without an objective anchor, supplement decisions rely entirely on memory and mood, both of which are shaped by expectancy effects. An objective proxy does not require a lab—it requires repeatability and consistency.
What qualifies as an objective proxy
An objective proxy must be:
- Measurable without interpretation: the number is the number, not the feeling about the number
- Repeatable: you can collect the same measure under similar conditions on a cadence that matches the trial
- Sensitive enough: it should plausibly change if the supplement is working
Common objective proxies by goal
| Goal | Objective proxy examples |
|---|---|
| Sleep | Minutes from lights-out to sleep (timed); wearable-reported total sleep time |
| Training performance | Estimated 1RM; total volume; split time or average watts |
| Metabolic health | Fasting weight (weekly average); waist circumference; lipid panel |
| Focus and productivity | Completed deep-work blocks (tracked with timer); reaction-time test score |
| Gut health | Bristol stool type rating; number of symptoms per week |
Pairing with subjective proxies
Objective proxies work best alongside subjective measures. An outcome where both a subjective and objective measure agree is a more reliable signal than either alone.
Practical action step
Pick one objective proxy before you start the trial and commit to collecting it at least twice per week throughout the full cycle.
Uncertainty and limits
- Evidence is limited on which proxy variables best represent "real-world" outcomes for most supplements in non-clinical settings.
- Evidence is limited on the sensitivity of home-collected objective measures (such as wearable sleep data) compared to lab-grade instruments.

How this appears in Unfair
Objective proxy data is logged as a metric pair alongside dose events. The review cycle compares the baseline mean to the intervention mean for each tracked proxy.
Clinical safety note
Some objective proxies can also serve as early warning signals. Blood pressure, resting heart rate, and body weight trends can shift with supplement use. If a proxy moves in an unexpected direction, treat it as a safety signal and reassess before continuing.
